B When I was six, a new family moved into the house next door. There was a girl, Frances, who was about my age. We became best friends soon. I was too young to notice what was really going on in her life, but my mother did. Mom noticed that Frances never invited anyone into the rooms they lived in. Her mother went off to work very early in the morning and came back looking very tired. And her two older brothers wore dirty clothes and were never at home. Frances was always hungry, and her clothes were often too small. Mom never mentioned anything to me. But she once asked, “Would you mind if I give Frances some of your clothes?” I agreed. Frances seemed very thrilled. Mom began to spend more time with Frances and me. She and I had always done kitchen jobs together, but now the three of us were making biscuits and washing up together. Frances was always willing to help, as long as Mom was there. And sometimes they would just sit together and talk while I was off doing something else. That routine ( 日 常 事 物) continued until we were both teenagers. But then her mother decided they were moving back to Ireland. We promised to write to each other. One day, my mom called to say that a letter from Frances had arrived. “When I was four, my father died. My mother tried to make money. She ignored me. Your mom saved me. Without her love and attention, I would never have survived ( 渡 过 难 关) my childhood. I have used your mother’s example as my guide to care for people around me.”
My mother taught me many things, but this was her most valuable lesson. Watching her example and seeing the life-changing results were powerful. We will never know how or when our acts of kindness will influence others, but it’s always better to try.
- What do we know about Frances’ family from Paragraph 2? A. They were unhappy to come to a new place. B. They tried hard to avoid their neighbors. C. They cared little about each other. D. They lived a very difficult life.
- What does the underlined word “thrilled” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Proud. B. Excited. C. Calm. D. Confident.
- What does the author try to show through the fourth paragraph? A. Frances was a good helper. B. Frances was used to the routine. C. Frances got on well with the author’s mom. D. Frances was good at doing kitchen jobs.
- What kind of person is the author’s mother? A. ambitious and successful B. kind and observant C. rich and strict D. talkative and selfish
C Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many years later? Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain, in rats at least. “This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important —not just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong track of cognitive ( 认 知 的) development during ageing,” says Martin of the University of Toronto, Canada. “In humans, it may put off the appearance of Alzheimer’s ( 阿 兹 海 默 症) symptoms, possibly to the point of preventing the disease.” Martin’s team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks. Around four months later—when the rats had reached middle age—the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear. Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room. The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same
percentage of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn’t remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings. “The results suggest the amount of physical activity when we’re young, at least for rats, has an influence on brain and cognitive health—in the form of better memories—when we’re older,” says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that, in humans, exercise improves the growth of new brain cells.
- The study shows that ________. A. exercise when young can prevent memory loss when older in rats B. physical activity is important for physical health C. using the running wheels is of benefit to the rats’ growth D. physical activity can prevent human’s Alzheimer’s symptoms
- What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. study B. development C. benefit D. exercise 10. How are Paragraph 3 and 4 mainly developed? ______ A. By analyzing causes. B. By giving an example. C. By showing differences. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards the animal study? D. By describing the process. A. Surprised. B. Critical (批判性的) C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
D Since time immemorial, people have been searching for the fountain of youth. Surprisingly, the dream of human immortality is, according to some scientists, not so far out of reach. Professor Brian Cox, Google’s Ray Kurzweil, and Tesla head Elon Musk all agree on not only the possibility of human immortality but also that it is not too far away. The solution, they say, is something called the “technological singularity”. The singularity is a combination of humankind with computers, namely uploading the contents of one’s brain onto a hard drive. In that way, a person’s consciousness can stay alive after a physical body gets worse. This is based on the idea that a human brain is simply a machine, and there is, according to Professor Cox, “no reason at all why we cannot simulate ( 模 拟) human intelligence” using a computer.
Although Professor Cox did not say when the singularity would occur, Google’s Ray Kurzweil predicts that the singularity will happen as early as 2045. By 2100, he says, human body parts will be replaceable by machine parts. Further by uploading our brains onto a computer, we will be able to toy with it, and become “able to expand the scope of our intelligence a billion-fold (十亿倍)”. Elon Musk agreed with the assessments of the other scientists, even going so far as saying that the chances that we are not in a computer simulation right now are “one in billions”. Google is preparing for a future where you can download personalities onto robots. For example, you might be able to download onto your robot a celebrity personality, or the personality of your late grandmother. The search engine giant filed a patent ( 专 利) for this download process recently. So they definitely believe that the singularity is just around the corner. All you have to do is hold on until 2045, and soon you can effectively live in the cloud.
- How did the writer explain the idea of “technological singularity” in Paragraph 3? A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers. C. By logically reasoning. D. By giving a definition.
- How can humankind improve by 2100 according to the text? A. Physically and intelligently. B. Emotionally and materially. C. Individually and corporately. D. Psychologically and spiritually.
- Which of the following can Elon Musk most probably agree with? A. Computers and humankind are quite different. B. Computers are much smarter than humankind. C. Computers can never surpass humankind at all. D. Computers can be another version of humankind.
- What’s the passage mainly about? A. The development of robots with downloadable personalities. B. The reason for using computers to simulate human intelligence. C. The possibility of achieving immortality through brain uploading. D. The impact of the technological singularity on human consciousness.
第二节(共 5 小题:每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Beat Afternoon Tiredness As the clock approaches 2:30 p.m., our eyelids often grow heavy. This is partly because our body temperature naturally drops in the afternoon, and this slight drop can make us feel relaxed and tired. 16. By using certain practical strategies, you can keep your energy steady and stay awake throughout the whole afternoon. 17 Light exposure sends direct signals to brain regions that help keep us awake. Modern indoor environments typically lack sufficient light intensity for mental awareness, so just 10 minutes of sunlight exposure can restore these signals instantly and efficiently. Apply Strategic Protein Timing
18. What you eat and when you eat impacts daily energy patterns. A traditional lunch with purified carbohydrates (碳水化合物) causes blood sugar to rise and then drop, making afternoon tiredness even worse than usual. Nutritionists recommend protein to keep blood sugar stable, as it digests slowly and prevents sharp rises in blood sugar. A midday meal should have at least 20—30 grams of protein each day. Use Movement Breaks Prolonged sitting causes tiredness because it reduces oxygen delivery to the brain. Taking a 5-minute break every 45—90 minutes boosts energy levels effectively. Simple activities like delivering small items or doing desk stretches work really well. 19. Regulate Your Breath During concentrated study, many students breathe shallowly, thus reducing oxygen intake when the brain needs it most. 20. Breathe in through the nose for four counts, hold briefly, then breathe out through the mouth for six counts. Repeating this 5—10 times activates the body’s natural energy-giving systems.
A. Adjust indoor brightness B. Adopt natural light exposure C. But we don’t have to just give in to tiredness D. The easy method fits easily into daily routines
E. Small lifestyle adjustments can prevent afternoon tiredness F. Diet plays a major role in controlling afternoon energy levels G. A simple 2-minute breathing practice can restore focus and energy

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
- 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。 Mya finished playing a Christmas carol and looked up at her piano teacher. “You played that very well,” her music teacher, Ms. Jackson said and invited Mya to join some of the other students to play carols at the mall this Saturday afternoon. Mya used her shyness as an excuse to refuse her teacher quickly. Ms. Jackson told her that the best way to overcome her fear of playing in public
was by actually doing what scared her. The recital (独奏) was going to be held right after Christmas. She would have to play in front of an audience then. Playing at the mall this weekend would be great practice. However, Mya still insisted on her own thought and she told Ms. Jackson that her great-grandmother had invited her family to the Christmas party at her retirement community that afternoon, so she had no time to take part in the activity. Mya didn’t add that she was relieved to have an excuse not to have to play at the mall. The thought of playing the piano with so many people around made her feel very nervous. On Saturday morning, as Mya wrapped presents for Great-Grandma, she thought about her friends playing the piano at the mall. She pictured hundreds of shoppers wandering around and listening while going from store to store. Some of them would take breaks from shopping to sit on benches and watch the piano players. “I’m so glad I won’t be there,” she thought. When Mya and her parents arrived at the retirement community, they greeted Great-Grandma with hugs and wishes for a merry Christmas. Mrs. Carmen, the director of the community, showed a short holiday movie. After that the residents opened their gifts. “We usually end by singing ‘Silent Night’,” Mrs. Carmen said. “But our piano player wasn’t able to make it today.” 注意:

阅读下列短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 When I was a kid, if someone told me that I would grow up to become a published author and founder of a youth literacy foundation, I would have laughed and kept walking. Even now when I see the title of my latest picture book My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World, I shake my head, not quite believing that book has my name on it. But the truth is, this story comes from my own personal experience. It took me a very long time to find my personal reading voice. In Valdosta, GA, where I grew up, my community promoted two pathways to a better life for little boys like me: being an athlete and being an entertainer. I was no different than the other kids, so I did what felt natural: Play football and overlook school. School presented challenges every day and so did football practice, but overcoming physical adversity was on trend with my neighborhood’s culture. Reading books
not so much. Fortunately, I went to college. That’s where my reading struggles really appeared. Trips to the grocery store were stressful because there was so much reading involved in the simple act of buying food. I would misread labels and grab the wrong items. Once, I picked up apple sauce thinking it was apple slices. I didn’t notice my mistake until I got home and realized that it was my inability to understand the differences in the wording on the labels that caused the mistake. I realized that I needed to make an important decision. If I wanted to be a better version of me, I had to become a stronger reader. I joined a book club and read every free moment I had. My journey with reading also created a desire in me to inspire others who struggle with reading. So I started a nonprofit, Share the Magic Foundation, trying to transform the lives of children living in underserved communities through literacy.

They face challenges when learning online. A main source of distraction is digital technology. While electronic devices are required for
online learning, they easily steal attention for long periods of time. Most students will hold their phones or leave them on their desks while studying. There is no doubt that during this time a text message from a friend can start a conversation that results in totally ignoring an assignment. Students might open new tabs to watch a fun video or scroll through social media threads. To overcome this challenge, students are encouraged to put all devices out of sight while working and build a solid timetable. In addition to electronic devices, background noises can be a huge obstacle when it comes to online learning. In fact, sitting in a silent environment often emphasizes background noises even more. Television, family members, pets running in the house, or siblings listening to loud music can all be sources of interruption. Even weather can be a distraction! Imagine a strong wind blowing through the trees or a loud thunderstorm with rain. All these noises can end up disrupting students and affecting their study. A pair of headphones can minimize noise and help students stay on task. Indeed, where and how we study can be a source of distraction as well. Some students wear comfortable pajamas while lying on their beds with laptops to watch class lectures. This can be a problem for concentration because humans mentally associate the bed with resting. Likewise, kitchens raise even more problems! Thinking about food frequently can disturb studying or cause a student to miss part of the class. This problem can be solved by trying to slowly train the brain to separate school time from resting and eating time. Also, a student can grab a light snack before class starts or even before starting an assignment. Different students face different challenges at home. Students need to figure out ways to ensure they stay on track to achieve their academic goals.
According to the passage, what can students do to overcome distractions caused by digital technology while learning online?
Why do kitchens raise problems for students studying at home?
Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. To avoid being disturbed by background noises, students could sit in a silent environment.

- Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Tired of waiting in endless lines to pay for what you have bought? Angry at wasting time in traffic jams only to find no parking spaces when you eventually arrive at the store? If this is you, then online shopping is the answer to your dreams of trouble-free shopping. However, online shopping brings its own challenges. Here are a few things to remember when browsing various websites. The claim made by online sites is that shopping online is a safe way to make purchases. The evidence challenges this. In any case, you only have to be the victim of fraud ( 诈 骗) once to experience all the problems that come with this form of stealing. Another problem is that goods look quite different in reality from what you see on your computer screen. This might not be a problem if you are buying washing powder but could be a major disappointment when that beautiful blue dress you ordered turned up in green. Some even argue that online shopping indirectly causes global warming. Yes, your car can
stay parked but how are online goods delivered? Goods are often delivered by some large vans giving off carbon dioxide and adding to our already desperate traffic problems. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________

- 【参考范文】 “Mya can play the piano,” Great-Grandma announced, smiling proudly. “Wonderful,” Mrs. Carmen said. She smiled and invited Mya to play the song. Mya doubted how she could find the
courage to play here. This would be worse than playing at the mall. At least there, people would pay attention to shopping. But here, everyone was sitting in a big circle facing the piano. Mya was about to say she couldn’t do it, but then she saw the smiles on all the faces as they looked eagerly toward her. She remembered the encouraging words from Ms. Jackson. Mya took a deep breath and walked to the piano. She sat down on the bench and played “Silent Night” all the way through without making a mistake and the residents sang the song together. As the last note of “Silent Night” finished, a burst of applause rang out. Mya felt an overwhelming sense of belonging and pride. She not only overcame her fear but also brought joy to these dear souls. “Thank you, Mya. Your music has touched our hearts today,” Carmen said. Mya still sat at the piano, looked around at the smiling faces and realized that her performance had created a moment of shared happiness. Inspired by this experience, Mya felt a newfound confidence about the upcoming Christmas recital. She knew that every performance was an opportunity to spread joy and connect with others through the universal language of music.
